How to set up Chatbase as your small business website chatbot
Updated
Create an AI agent in Chatbase, train it on your files, website, text, Q&A or Notion pages, test its answers in the Playground, then add it to your site. Most sites paste one chat bubble script from Channels; WordPress sites install the Chatbase plugin and paste an Agent ID. Chatbase estimates five minutes (quick-start guide, checked Oct 20, 2026).

What is Chatbase?
Chatbase builds AI agents trained on your own business data and deploys them where customers already are: a website chat bubble, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, email, phone and Slack. Its docs describe it as no-code, with copy-paste embeds and drag-and-drop uploads, plus an API for developers.

How do you set up Chatbase step by step?
Create an agent, train it, test it, then deploy it. Chatbase's quick-start guide walks through seven moves: create the agent, add data, write instructions, test in the Playground, enable it and copy the embed script, add it to your site, then confirm the chat bubble answers.
- Create an AI agent. Sign in, open your dashboard and click New AI Agent.
- Add training data. Pick files, text snippets, a website crawl, Q&A pairs or Notion pages, then click Create Agent. Chatbase says training typically takes 2 to 5 minutes, depending on how much data you add (Chatbase quick-start guide, checked Oct 20, 2026).
- Write instructions. Go to Build > Instructions to set tone, role and topics to avoid. Use Compare to test changes side by side before saving.
- Test in the Playground. Ask real customer questions, try different models and a low temperature for consistent answers.
- Enable and get the embed script. Open Channels, click Manage on the Chat bubble card, then Deploy to copy the script. Only enabled agents can be embedded.
- Add it to your site. Paste the script before the closing body tag, or in the head to load it earlier. On WordPress, install the Chatbase plugin and paste your Agent ID instead.
- Check it's live. Visit your site, open the chat bubble and ask a question. If it's missing, check the agent is enabled, the Agent ID matches, and caching or ad blockers aren't hiding it.

Why Chatbase is featured: Chatbase is the featured tool because it is one of our partners and because its docs cover the whole small-business path, from training on a website to a WordPress plugin, in plain steps. We have not tested answer quality.

What can you train a Chatbase agent on?
Files (PDF, TXT, DOC and DOCX up to 20 MB each), text snippets, websites (crawl from the homepage, a sitemap or single links), Q&A pairs, Notion pages, and closed tickets from Salesforce or Zendesk. Changes train within seconds, and you can exclude paths such as a blog or careers section.

How do you add Chatbase to a WordPress, Wix or Webflow site?
On WordPress, go to Plugins > Add New Plugin, search Chatbase, install and activate it, then paste your Agent ID (from Settings > General in Chatbase) under Settings > Chatbase. Chatbase has separate guides for Wix, Webflow, Weebly, Framer, Bubble and Vercel; most use the website widget embed code.

Which tools does Chatbase connect to?
Its docs list messaging channels (WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Slack, email, Twilio phone), stores and billing (Shopify, Stripe), helpdesks for handoff (Zendesk, Freshdesk, Intercom, HubSpot, Salesforce and others), booking with Cal.com or Calendly, and Zapier or Make. Developers get a REST API, webhooks, an MCP server and mobile SDKs.

Who is Chatbase a good fit for, and who isn't it?
It suits small businesses whose answers already live in readable text: a website, policies, manuals or FAQs, plus anyone on WordPress, Wix or Shopify who wants a chat bubble without code. It suits you less if your key information sits in scanned PDFs, images or video, or your site blocks crawlers. For inbox, store and lead jobs beyond website chat, see Grok Bot for small business.

What are Chatbase's limits?
Chatbase's own docs list these: scanned PDFs with no text layer can't be trained on, images and videos aren't processed, some sites aren't scraper-friendly, storage depends on your plan, weekly auto-resync is only on some plans, and when message credits run out the agent shows as unavailable. Ad blockers can hide the widget.

What are the alternatives to Chatbase?
Two in our directory. Botpress describes itself as an AI agent platform for customer support that works on top of your helpdesk or as one. Chat Thing trains on your website, docs and files and runs on web chat, WhatsApp and phone. Neither is a partner, and we haven't tested either.

Chatbase setup: FAQ
How long does it take to set up Chatbase?
Chatbase's quick-start guide estimates five minutes from start to finish, with training typically taking 2 to 5 minutes depending on how much data you add (Chatbase quick-start guide, checked Oct 20, 2026).
Do I need to code to use Chatbase?
No. Chatbase's docs say it's built for non-technical users: you paste one embed script, or use the WordPress plugin. Developers can also use its API.
How do I add Chatbase to WordPress?
Install and activate the Chatbase plugin from Plugins > Add New Plugin, then paste your Agent ID under Settings > Chatbase and save.
Can Chatbase learn from my website?
Yes. Add your homepage to crawl every public page, point it at a sitemap, or add single links. You can exclude paths you don't want.
Why can't Chatbase read my PDF?
The text has to be selectable. Chatbase can't train on scanned PDFs with no text layer, so convert them to text or paste the content in.
Can Chatbase hand a chat to a human?
Yes. Its escalation actions open a ticket in Chatbase Helpdesk or a connected helpdesk such as Zendesk, Freshdesk, Intercom or HubSpot.
Does Chatbase work on WhatsApp?
Yes. Chatbase's docs cover connecting a WhatsApp number, including one you already use in the WhatsApp Business app.
Is my data used to train other models?
Chatbase says your data is never used to train other models and is encrypted in transit and at rest.
