Remote MCP servers: plug tools into any agent by URL
A remote MCP server is an MCP server hosted at a URL instead of running on your computer. You paste the server URL into Claude, Cursor, Codex or another client, sign in with OAuth if asked, and its tools appear. Streamable HTTP is the standard remote transport; DartzDabz indexes 1,577 remote endpoints and checks them daily.
What is a remote MCP server?
An MCP server that runs at a URL instead of as a process on your computer. Your client connects over HTTP and usually signs in with OAuth, so there's nothing to install. MCP itself is "an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems." (MCP docs)

Should you use Streamable HTTP or SSE?
Use Streamable HTTP. Claude Code's docs mark SSE as deprecated, and Codex's docs list only stdio and Streamable HTTP servers. Cursor still supports SSE. The private servers question: the official MCP Registry doesn't list private servers and suggests hosting your own private registry. (Registry)
