What is an MCP server?

An MCP server is a small service that gives an AI app a set of tools and data through the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI applications to external systems. Any MCP-compatible client, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or VS Code, can discover those tools and call them, the way a USB-C port works with many devices.

What is an MCP server, in simple terms?

It's a plug that lets an AI assistant use another app's tools and data through one standard protocol. The MCP docs compare MCP to a USB-C port for AI applications. (MCP docs)

How does an MCP server work?

Clients, servers and tools

The client (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code, Codex) connects to a server, lists its tools, and calls them when a task needs them.

Local (stdio) vs remote (HTTP) servers

A local server runs as a process on your machine; a remote server runs at a URL. See remote MCP servers.

Sign-in with OAuth

Remote servers usually sign in with OAuth. Claude Code uses /mcp, Codex uses codex mcp login, and Cursor prompts when you add the server.

How is an MCP server different from an API?

An API is built for programmers who write code against it. An MCP server wraps actions as named, described tools that an AI client can discover and call itself, often on top of an existing API.

How does MCP compare with skills, A2A, CLIs and RAG?

What it isUse it for
MCP serverlive tools and data over a standard protocolreaching external systems
Agent Skilla folder with a SKILL.md of instructions and scriptsknow-how loaded on demand
A2Aagent-to-agent protocoldelegating to other agents
CLIa command-line programwhen the agent has a shell
RAGretrieving documents into contextstatic knowledge

What is an MCP client, connector or gateway?

The client is the AI app that connects to servers. "Connector" is the name some apps, such as Claude and ChatGPT, use for a remote MCP server added in settings. A gateway sits in front of several servers to centralize auth and policy.

Where can you find MCP servers?

The official MCP Registry

The official registry publishes metadata for publicly accessible servers and is meant to be consumed by downstream aggregators. (Registry)

Is it safe to connect an MCP server?

Only connect servers you trust and give them the narrowest access. Claude Code's docs warn that servers fetching external content can expose you to prompt injection. Cursor asks for approval before running MCP tools by default, and Codex lets you allow-list tools and set approval modes.

What else do people ask?

What is an MCP server in simple terms?

It's a plug that lets an AI assistant use another app's tools and data through one standard protocol. Once connected, the assistant can, for example, read issues, query a database or search docs directly instead of working from what you paste.

What is the difference between an MCP server and an API?

An API is built for programmers, who write code to call it. An MCP server wraps tools with names and descriptions that an AI client can discover and call by itself, often on top of an existing API.

What is an MCP client?

The MCP client is the AI app that connects to servers and calls their tools, such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or ChatGPT. One client can connect to many servers at once.

What is an MCP connector?

Connector is the name some apps, such as Claude and ChatGPT, give to a remote MCP server you connect through their settings. Underneath it is still an MCP server, usually with OAuth sign-in.

Local vs remote MCP server: what's the difference?

A local (stdio) server runs as a process on your computer; a remote server runs at a URL and usually signs in with OAuth. Remote servers need nothing installed and work across clients.

Where can I find MCP servers?

The official MCP Registry publishes metadata for public servers, and directories like DartzDabz add rankings, live checks and categories on top. Start with the best-MCP list for your client.

Are MCP servers safe?

They can be, if you only connect servers you trust and limit the access you grant. Client docs warn that servers fetching outside content can expose you to prompt injection, so review permissions and use scoped keys.
