What is Claude Duet?
Claude Duet is a new app from Anthropic where Claude works as a proactive agent. It went into research preview on October 21, 2026. It brings you what needs your attention, takes tasks you hand it by message, and keeps working when you step away, on a virtual machine with its own browser in the cloud. Anthropic built it around Claude Opus 5.5 for professionals and small business owners. It runs as a standalone app on iOS and Android, and on the web at claude.ai, separate from the main Claude app for now.

Which apps and connectors does Claude Duet work with?
Anthropic says Claude Duet can use the over 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace. It also carries over the memory, skills and connected apps already on your Claude account, so apps you connected in Claude are there from the first message. The launch post names Gmail, Slack, Intuit QuickBooks, Stripe, Gusto, LinkedIn, Docusign, HubSpot, Canva and Shopify as examples, each tied to a business task. Anthropic does not publish a separate Duet-only connector list; the Connectors Directory in Claude is where you browse what is available.

Connectors you already set up in Claude
Duet uses your Claude account, including its connectors, so set them up once in Claude under Customize, then Connectors. Claude inherits your permissions in each connected service: if you can't open a file or record there, the connector can't reach it either. You can also mark each tool as Always allow, Needs approval or Blocked.

Can Claude Duet use a custom MCP server?
Anthropic has not said yet. In the main Claude app, custom connectors point to a remote MCP server, on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans; Free accounts get one. Claude connects to that server from Anthropic's cloud, so it must be reachable on the public internet, not only on your laptop or a VPN. Duet's FAQ says it uses your account's connectors, but as of October 21 no Anthropic page says whether custom connectors work inside Duet. Test one before you rely on it.

Can Claude Duet buy things or make payments?
Yes, with your approval. Anthropic says Duet can purchase things for your business with Link, Stripe's digital wallet. Duet confirms the item with you, Link asks you to approve the spend, and it pays with a virtual card so your real card number is not shared. It can also check out at online stores with Shop Pay from Shopify. Some actions stay off-limits even if you approve them, such as trading securities or moving money between accounts. Saved logins from 1Password are listed as coming soon, with your permission.

How does Claude Duet keep connected apps safe?
Duet reads, drafts and prepares work on its own, but before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows you exactly what it will do and waits. Anthropic says Duet never directly sees your passwords or sign-in tokens, an auto mode classifier approves actions, and defenses against prompt injection come from its browser-use research. A new classifier checks each message for leaks of sensitive information. You can disconnect any app Duet has access to, and Anthropic says red teams and an outside firm tested it.
